On behalf of the Pennsylvania State University, University of Bucharest, and CIVIS.EU <http://civis.eu/> we would like to cordially invite you to the 2023 CHANCE Romania Undergraduate Research Symposium which marks the closure our first-ever multinational short-term study abroad initiative, Global Conservation: Environmental Challenges Facing the Danube River.

The event will take place at the University of Bucharest, at the Faculty of Biology, Voinov Amphitheater, Spl. Independentei 91-95, on Friday, 14 July 2023 from 15.00 to 17.30. Our event will start promptly with introductions which will be followed by 20-minute research presentations given by our student groups. Their topics concern present day water issues confronting the Danube Delta per the E.U. Water Framework Directive including eutrophication, loss of biodiversity, land use transformation, organic pollution, and microbial growth.

Student presentations will be recorded for those unable to attend due to international time differences.

During their scheduled time slot, our students will present their designated group’s research findings and interpretations from their two-and one-half-week summer field investigations and suggest future directives to improve the environmental sustainability of the Danube Delta.

Penn State’s international and award-winning CHANCE (Connecting Humans and Nature through Conservation Experiences) program, founded in 2004, uses high impact practices in higher education and research, plus diplomatic and outreach initiatives to augment the sustainability of select fragile and life-sustaining ecosystems. Specifically, its framework includes binational and short-term study abroad programming and online courses which incorporate authentic undergraduate research focused on environmental sustainability. Since 2021, CHANCE’s work in Romania has focused on the Danube River and its delta, which runs for 1,800 miles through 10 countries -- including Germany, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia -- has a distinctive history of sustainability. Heavily polluted when bordering countries were industrializing under Soviet rule, the river began to recover in the 1990s, but is now threatened again, particularly by the presence of micro-plastics, pesticides, and industrial waste.

We are proud to showcase the research work that was performed by our 2023 contingent of students who represent not only institutions of higher education in Romania and the U.S, but also from Belgium, Greece, Italy, Spain, and Scotland.
